BORGER, Texas — The New Mexico Military Institute men’s basketball team rallied out of a 14-point hole early in the first half and claimed its second straight Western Junior College Athletic Conference road victory with a 99-88 win over Frank Phillips College, Monday.

The Broncos (10-15, 3-8 WJCAC) fell behind 16-2 early in the first half, but staged a big comeback to take control of the game.

Over the final 14 minutes of the first half, NMMI outscored the host Plainsmen 46-17 to take a 48-33 lead into the break.

“On the road, (falling behind like) that usually spells disaster,” said Bronco coach Sean Schooley. “But, we fought back.

“When you get down like that, after a five-hour bus ride, it usually doesn’t end well. But, the guys fought hard and got back into it.”

FPC outscored the Broncos 55-51 in the second half, but could never get back into it.

“The guys held in and played really well,” Schooley said. “I’m really proud of them. It’s hard to win on the road in this league and we’ve done it two times in a row.”

The Broncos had six double-figure scorers in the win.

Royce Williams led NMMI with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Desmond Barnes added 20 points, Tyler Gaskins had 18 and D’Marnier Cunningham had 15.

Roswell alumnus A.J. Peralta and Juwan Newman each joined Williams with double-doubles. Peralta had 10 points and 12 boards and Newman had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
