The libero or defensive specialist position in volleyball is one of the hardest spots to fill, equivalent to the quarterback in football, the point guard in basketball, or the pitcher in baseball. They touch the ball more than anyone else on the court, only briefly come out of the game due to their special substitution status, and are usually the spark plugs and team captains of their volleyball teams.

This year, head Bronco Volleyball coach Shelby Forchtner and assistant coach Pam Grano looked next door to neighbor-state Arizona, and found their future libero at Monument Valley High School.  Naomi Whitehair has been a member of the Mustang’s varsity volleyball squad since her freshman year, and was a starter for the three-time defending state champions in Arizona’s Class 3A during her sophmore and junior seasons:

2009 Championship Bracket – Girls 3A Volleyball
2010 Championship Bracket – Girls 3A Volleyball

Her senior season, the Mustangs weren’t able to four-peat, but made a strong showing with a 15-3 overall record and another trip to the 3A State Championships Tournament. As an eight-seed in the 16-team tourney, MVHS won their first round match in three straight sets against Safford HS before falling to No.1 seeded Seton Catholic in the quarterfinals:

Whitehair’s volleyball honors include being selected twice to the Arizona 3A North All-Region Team, and once to the Arizona 3A All-State Team. She is also a participant in basketball and softball for the Mustangs, making her a true three-sport athlete. She earned an All-Region honorable mention in softball as a junior, and also boasts a 3.84 cumulative G.P.A. at Monument Valley High, located in Kayenta, AZ.

A smiling coach Forchtner looks on as Naomi signs her intent to play next season for the Broncos.
