Local briefs: Bronco baseball falls twice

College baseball

Trinidad State 13-9, NMMI 0-3

TRINIDAD, Colo. — The New Mexico Military Institute Bronco tennis team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Trinidad State Junior College, Wednesday.

In Game 1, Trinidad scored 10 runs on just three hits in the first inning and claimed a five-inning victory.

Laurence Marsach took the loss for the Broncos. He faced six batters in the first inning and didn’t record an out before being pulled.


NMMI had just three hits in the game — from Steven De La Cruz, Julio Velazquez and Tyler Gibson.

In Game 2, Trinidad raced out to a 6-1 lead with a six-run first inning and led 9-1 through four innings.

Rafael Belloc took the loss for NMMI. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs.

Johnny Garrett was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Emmanuel Frias was 2 for 4 with an RBI and De La Cruz was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

NMMI fell to 5-16 on the year.

Men’s tennis

University of the Southwest 5, NMMI 4

The Bronco men’s tennis team dropped a close match to visiting University of the Southwest, Wednesday.

The Broncos got singles wins from Deva Reddy, Yang Yang and Zach Romero.

Reddy and Yang then teamed up to win in doubles for NMMI’s other victory.

Women’s tennis

NMMI 8, University of the Southwest 1

NMMI beat University of the Southwest on Wednesday.

Singles wins came from Litia Godinet (first), Adalyn Hazelman (second), Samantha Dunn (third), Jazmine Burt (fifth) and Rachel Ballinger (sixth).

Doubles wins came from Godinet and Hazelman (first), Dunn and Valentina Beresiarte (second) and Burt and Hawkins.
