Local briefs: Rocket girls second after first round

RUIDOSO — The Goddard Lady Rockets finished Day 1 of the Leroy Gooch Invitational at the Links at Sierra Blanca in second place behind leader Deming.

The Rockets, led by Emilee Engelhard’s 78, shot a team aggregate of 349 on the first day and trail Deming by 25 shots.

Sara Garcia carded an 82 for the Rockets, Sara Cain shot 94, Danika Gomillion carded a 95 and Gabby Baker shot 101.

The Rockets lead Alamogordo by nine shots.


On the individual leaderboard, Engelhard is third and Garcia is fourth. Deming’s Darian Zachek leads after firing a 4-under 68 and Alamogordo’s Kacey Dalpes is second after an opening-round 72.

In the 1A/3A tournament, NMMI’s Andrea Aguilar shot 88 and Nina Martinez shot 98.

Boys golf

Rockets sixth after Day 1

RUIDOSO — The Goddard boys golf team is sixth after the first day of the Leroy Gooch Invitational at Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club.

The Rockets totaled a team aggregate of 323 and are 25 shots off the pace of Hobbs. Oñate is second at 307 and Deming is third at 309.

Steven Willis led the Rockets with a 74. Kemp Kuykendall shot 77, Ian Garcia carded an 85, Tom Snyder shot 87 and Bryce Mott shot 88.

Roswell is 11th after the first day with a 369.

Henry Candelaria led the Coyotes with a 78, Jake Andreis shot 85, Daniel Lopez shot 102 and Zach Jennings carded a 104.

On the individual leaderboard, Willis is tied for sixth, Kuykendall is tied for 12th and Candelaria is tied for 15th.

Deming’s Derek Baeza leads after an opening-round 69 and Hobbs’ Ryan Hawkins is two shots back.

In the 1A/3A tournament, NMMI’s Luis Flores shot 81 and Lance Hinkle carded a 110.

Dexter Invite postponed

The Dexter Invitational, which was scheduled to be played Monday at the Roswell Country Club, was postponed.

No make-up date has been announced.

Prep baseball

Dexter 11, Artesia JV 1, 5 innings

ARTESIA — Dexter scored at least one run in all five innings and cruised past the Artesia junior varsity team, Monday.

The Demons posted two in the first, four in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to the win.

Jacob Sanchez picked up the win for Dexter. He struck out five in five innings of work.

At the plate for Dexter, Francisco Duran was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Jose Ruiz was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Kevin Paez was 1 for 2.

The Demons moved to 12-6 with the win.
