Local briefs: Rockets take 3rd

RUIDOSO — The Goddard Lady Rockets finished third at the Leroy Gooch Invitational, Tuesday.

The Rockets totaled a team aggregate of 374 in the second round for a two-day total of 723. Deming won the tournament with a 679 and Alamogordo finished second at 713.

Sara Garcia led the Rockets with a second-round 83 to finish third on the individual leaderboard at 165. Deming’s Darian Zachek topped the field at 143 and Alamogordo’s Kacey Dalpes was second at 147.

 

Emilee Engelhard finished fifth at 170 after a second-round 92. Danika Gomillion was tied for 17th at 191, Sara Cain was tied for 25th at 199 and Gabby Baker tied for 32nd at 204.

In the 1A/3A tournament, NMMI’s Nina Martinez finished tied for 19th at 199 after a second-round 101. Teammate Andrea Aguilar withdrew from the tournament in the second round.

Boys golf

Goddard sixth, Roswell 11th

RUIDOSO — The Goddard boys golf team finished tied for sixth and Roswell was 11th at the Leroy Gooch Invitational, Tuesday.

Bryce Mott and Tom Snyder turned in Goddard’s low rounds on Tuesday with 80s. Kemp Kuykendall shot a second-round 81 and Ian Garcia shot 87.

Kuykendall finished tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard at 158. Snyder tied for 35th at 167, Mott was tied for 38th at 168 and Garcia was tied for 44th at 172.

The Rockets tied with Mayfield in the team standings with two-day total of 651. Hobbs won the tournament by five shots over Oñate. Deming was third at 609.

Roswell was led by Henry Candelaria’s 81 on Tuesday. Jake Andreis shot 82, Daniel Lopez carded an 84 and Zach Jennings shot 87.

Candelaria finished tied for 18th at 159, Andreis was tied for 35th at 167, Lopez was 51st at 186 and Jennings was 52nd at 191.

In the 1A/3A tournament, NMMI’s Luis Flores shot a second-round 79 and finished third overall with a two-day total of 160.

Lance Hinkle shot 115 on Tuesday and finished 28th on the individual leaderboard at 225.

Prep baseball

Loving 10, NMMI 3

Loving plated four runs in the first inning and never looked back in a win over the Colts at NMMI Ballpark, Tuesday.

The Colts closed to within three in the fourth, but Loving scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Caleb Saiz took the loss for the Colts. He gave up four runs on four hits in four innings of work.

At the plate for the Colts (11-5), Pierce Arnold, Trevor Fowler and Blade Allen each had one hit.

Clovis 8-9, Roswell 7-3

CLOVIS — Clovis plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win Game 1 and used an eight-run third to complete the sweep in Game 2.

Clovis trailed 7-6 entering the final half inning, but managed to load the bases. A single tied it up and another single won the game for the Wildcats.

In the second game, Roswell allowed eight runs in the third inning and never got back into the game.

The two losses dropped the Coyotes’ record to 1-15.

Ruidoso 8, Dexter 3

DEXTER — Ruidoso broke open a 5-3 game with three runs in the sixth to pull away for a win over Dexter, Tuesday.

Edgar Munoz took the loss for the Demons after allowing eight runs on five hits and striking out seven in seven innings of work.

Sylvester Lomeli was 2 for 3 at the plate for the Demons (12-7), while Jeremy Sanchez was 1 for 2, and Justin Salas and Lorenzo Coronado were each 1 for 3.

Boys tennis

NMMI 9, Portales 0

PORTALES — NMMI’s win streak stretched to 31, including 13-0 this season, with a win over Portales on Tuesday.

The Colts picked up singles wins from Jose Gonzalez (first; 6-0, 6-0), Federico Sanchez (second; 6-0, 6-0), Josh Shure (third; 6-3, 6-0), Tom Rios (fourth; 6-0, 6-1), Mauricio Moncada (fifth; 6-1, 6-1) and Luis Moncada (sixth; 6-0, 6-0).

Doubles wins came from Gavin Lynch and Shure (first; 6-0, 6-0), Jorge Garza and Gerry Estrella (second; 6-1, 6-0) and Moncada and Moncada (third; 6-0, 6-2).

Girls tennis

Portales 6, NMMI 3

PORTALES — The Lady Colt tennis team had a strong showing against Portales on Tuesday.

NMMI’s Samantha Ikard (first) and Susanna Pesonen (second) picked up singles victories and teamed up for a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 victory at first doubles.
