Broncos qualify for nationals

PLANO, Texas — The NMMI women’s tennis team beat North Central Texas 7-2 at the Region V Tournament to clinch a spot in the NJCAA National Championships for the third consecutive season.

The Broncos, ranked No. 15 in the April 16 NJCAA poll, picked up singles wins from Litia Godinet (first; 7-6 {7-3}, 6-3), Valentina Beresiarte (third; 7-6 {7-5}, 6-2), Alyssa Hawkins (fourth; 6-2, 6-3), Samantha Dunn (fifth; 7-6 {7-2}, 6-1) and Jazmine Burt (sixth; 6-1, 6-2).

Doubles wins came from Beresiarte and Dunn (second; 7-5, 6-4) and Burt and Hawkins (6-3, 6-1).

 

In addition to the team qualifying for nationals, Bronco coach Zeljka Vidic was awarded with her second consecutive coach of the year award.

Vidic said that her team fought hard.

“We fought really hard and it was a tough match,” she said. “The girls played some great tennis and competed well. They represented NMMI well. It was just a great match and we are all excited about the result and being able to compete at nationals.”

NMMI will compete at the NJCAA National Championships at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, from May 5 through May 11.

Men’s tennis

NMMI 5, Temple 4

PLANO, Texas — NMMI clinched a berth in the NJCAA National Championships with a win over Temple at the Region V Tournament on Saturday.

The Broncos, ranked No. 15 in the NJCAA, got singles wins from Ian Honila, Deva Reddy and Zachary Romero. Doubles wins came from Reddy and Yang Yang, and Honila and Romero.

All of NMMI’s wins were in straight sets.

The NJCAA National Championships will be held from May 13 through May 18 at Collin County Community College in Plano, Texas.

Prep baseball

NMMI 4-6, Loving 3-9

LOVING — NMMI picked up its first district win of the season in the first game of a twin bill against Loving on Saturday.

In Game 1, the Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but wouldn’t score again.

NMMI took the lead with a four-run fourth and held on to the 4-3 lead for its first district win.

Colt coach Charlie Ward said that the Game 1 performance was probably the best game of his team’s season.

“It was probably our best game of the year,” he said. “We had two errors but our pitchers struck out 11 and we played great defense.”

Caleb Saiz went five innings to get the win for NMMI and helped his own cause with three base hits.

Loving jumped out to an early lead again in the second game, but NMMI couldn’t complete the comeback.

Chance Cavin and Blade Allen each drove in three runs for the Colts (12-9) in Game 2, while Richard Trujillo picked up two hits.
