The New Mexico Military Institute Colt baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader from district foe Dexter at NMMI Ballpark, Thursday.

The Colts captured a 7-4 victory in Game 1 and then took the nightcap 6-5.

In Game 1, NMMI (15-9, 4-5 District 4-2A) took the lead in the home half of the first and never trailed en route to a three-run win.

The Colts went up 1-0 on a wild pitch in the first when Caleb Saiz scored. They then tacked onto the lead in the third in a big way.

Chance Cavin blasted a triple into right to score Scott Schwab and Pierce Arnold. Cavin scored moments later when Richard Trujillo singled into left.

That made it 5-0 in favor of the Colts.

Dexter trimmed the lead to 5-4 with back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

In the fourth, Jeremy Sanchez scored the Demons’ first run on an error, followed by a sacrifice fly by Lorenzo Coronado to score Justin Salas to make it 4-2.

In the fifth, Carlos Bejarano scored on Ramiro Robles’ single. Robles then scored during the next at-bat when Sanchez singled into center.

Dexter could get no closer, though.

The Colts, meanwhile, tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Saiz picked up the victory after allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four in six innings on the mound. Thomas Haley came on in the seventh to pick up the save.

Dexter’s Edgar Munoz took the loss. He gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out four in five innings.

At the plate, Arnold was 3 for 3 for Colts, while Saiz, Schwab and Robert Haley added two hits apiece. Cavin finished with two RBIs.

For Dexter, Kevin Paez was 2 for 2. Robles and Sanchez had the only other Dexter hits.

In Game 2, the Colts broke open a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth to pick up their 15th win of the season.

Dexter scored one in the first and one in the third, while NMMI scored one in the second and one in the fourth for a 2-2 tie going to the fifth.

In the home half of the fifth, NMMI plated four runs on four hits and took the lead for good.

Saiz scored on a Schwab single for the first run and Schwab scored the second run on a double by Cavin down the first-base line.

After a Demon pitching change, Trujillo singled up the middle to plate Arnold and Cavin.

Dexter came back with three runs in the sixth, but the rally came to an end when Robles struck out with the bases loaded.

NMMI secured the win when Schwab made a diving grab at second and doubled off Justin Salas.

Arnold got the win on the mound after allowing four runs on five hits and striking out one in five innings. Haley picked up his second save of the night in relief of Arnold.

Sanchez took the loss. He gave up six runs on eight hits in 4 1⁄3 innings.

At the plate for NMMI, Trujillo was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Schwab, Arnold and Cavin each had two hits.

For the Demons (14-12, 2-7), Salas was 2 for 4.
