Local briefs: Joyce wins district singles

ARTESIA — Six singles players and four doubles teams from Chaves County advanced to the individual state tennis tournament out of the District 4-4A tournament, Saturday.

Goddard’s Stephen Powers, Martin Joyce, Gabby Joyce and Katie Hillman, and Roswell’s Juan Macias and Delsy Ruiz qualified in the singles portion.

In doubles, Goddard’s Konnor Kundomal and Tristan Collar, and Lexi Cassels and Shannon DuCharme qualified. Roswell’s Pedro Ruiz and Dylan McArthur, and Alicia Romero and Jesse Jennings also qualified.

 

Powers won the boys singles title by beating Macias 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match. M. Joyce finished third with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Roswell’s Jesus Atienzo.

Kundomal and Collar won the boys doubles crown after beating Artesia’s Adam Solares and Jaevan Grado 6-2, 6-1 in the title match. P. Ruiz and McArthur finished third with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Artesia’s Jimmy and Josh Darnell.

G. Joyce won the girls singles title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hillman in the championship match. D. Ruiz finished third with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Goddard’s Anisha Suri.

Romero and Jennings won the girls doubles title with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Artesia’s Kenzie Rutledge and Kelli Richards. Cassels and DuCharme finished third with a 7-5, 7-5 win over teammates Brooke Bates and Sabah Osmani.

NMMI wins district

LOVINGTON — The New Mexico Military Institute boys tennis team stretched its win streak to 35 straight on Saturday and won the District 3-1A/3A championship.

The Colts toppled Lovington 5-0 in the finals to win the district crown for the second year in a row.

Singles winners for the Colts were Gavin Lynch (second; 6-1, 6-1), Jorge Garza (third; 6-0, 6-0), Gerardo Estrella (fourth; 6-0, 6-0), Tom Rios (fifth; 6-0, 6-0) and Luis Zaragoza (sixth; 6-0, 6-0). Jose Gonzalez was up a set at No. 1 singles before the match was ended because NMMI had already secured five victories.

Prep baseball

Artesia 12-11, Goddard 2-1

Artesia secured the District 4-4A championship by sweeping a pair from Goddard, Saturday.

The Bulldogs finished the year 6-2 in district play, while Goddard was 4-4 and Roswell was 2-6.

Caelin Wilcox took the loss in Game 1 for the Rockets and Devin Hubbard took the loss in Game 2.

The Rockets fell to 14-12 overall with the losses.

College baseball

Odessa 6-6, NMMI 3-3

Odessa handed the Broncos a pair of losses in their final home games of the year at NMMI Ballpark.

The Wranglers broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the eighth in Game 1 en route to the victory. In Game 2, the Wranglers scored three runs in the fourth to regain the lead and never trailed again.

Rafael Belloc gave up six runs on 10 hits over eight innings and took the loss for the Broncos. Marshall Dalziel took the loss in Game 2 after allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Steven De La Cruz went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the Game 1, while Tyler Gibson and Elvis Perez each had two hits in Game 2.

The Colts fell to 10-42 overall and 4-24 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play.
