ALBUQUERQUE — Goddard’s Gabby Joyce fell in the quarterfinals to Mesilla Valley Christian’s Maddie Andersson 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NMAA Class 4A State Singles Championships.

Andersson jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead to start the match, using a patient-play style that can frustrate an opponent.

Joyce battled back, however, to tie the set at three, but Andersson reclaimed the lead in seventh game.

With serve, Joyce fell behind 15-0 after an error at the net. She won the next point with an ace and made it 40-15 after she hit an approach shot deep into the right corner and then put away the weak return.

Andersson forced a deuce, however, and won the next two points to take a 4-3 lead. She closed the set out by winning the final two games.

In the second set, Joyce seemed to find her groove and showed off her multi-faceted game. The Rocket junior won points with power, precision at the net and on the baseline in a 6-3 second-set win that seemed to put mometum squarely in her favor.

In the third set, though, Andersson won the first four games and won the set, 6-2.
