Bronco Women Tracksters Save Best for Last at Tarleton State Open

The Women’s Track and Field Team from New Mexico Military Institute journeyed to Stephenville, Texas to take part in the Tarleton State Invitational Track and Field Meet.  Twenty teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico took part in this Season-Opening Outdoor Meet.  Over half of the teams present were NCAA Division II or III schools with NMMI being one of only three NJCAA teams.  NMMI, as a team, finished in 13th place.

The old saying of “Save the best for last” surely was true for the NMMI athletes. In the meet-ending 4 x 400 meter relay,  NMMI was in third place after the first leg by Karla Palacios.  Klaudia Szych moved them into second place on her leg, and Alisha Dickinson passed the remaining team just before handing off to Ana Baleveicau.  Ana increased the lead to about 20 meters by the time the race was over.  The other heat of the relay produced 4 times that were faster than the NMMI time, but Coach Batson had a surprise for them—they had shattered the NMMI School Record of 4:26.57 by over 10 seconds by running a 4:15.91!

In individual events, Klaudia Szych placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25.85 and Ana Baleveicau placed 6th in the 400 meter hurdle race with a time of 1:08.22.  Karla Palacios ran a time of 1:14.79 and placed 9th.  Alisha Dickinson won her heat in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.84 and placed 13th overall.

Etta Briscoe got the day started with her 21.71 meter hammer throw.   She followed up with a discus throw of 23.08 meters and a shot put of 9.17 meters.  This was her first try at the hammer throw and she learned some valuable lessons that should help her throws later in the season.

The sprinters now took Center Stage with the 100 meter dash.  Keshia San Pedro had the best time with a 14.87 .  Next came Liliana Rico with a time of 16.37.  Meriel Simpson came across the finish line in a time of 17.45 .  These three runners also ran the 200 meter dash.  Keshia San Pedro again had the fastest time running a 32.90, which was a PR .  Liliana Rico ran her own PR with a time of 35.20.  Meriel Simson ran  a time of 39.87, which gave her the second PR of the day—the first being in the 100 meter dash. .

The NMMI Women‘s Track and Field Team will participate  in the West Texas A&M Relays in Canyon TX next Saturday, March 16.
