Colts advance to the second round of state on penalty kicks

The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team defeated the Socorro Warriors 4-2 in penalty kicks after neither team could score in regulation or in overtime.

Quan Nguyen collects the fourth penalty kick for the Coltsto take them to the second round of state.

Head Colt soccer coach John Barbour credited his defense for the victory.

“We played well defensively and kept another clean sheet; unfortunately we could not counter on the other end, which made it difficult to finish on the other end.

Diego Monteverde did not start in goal for the Colts, but came in for the injured Ricardo early in the first half.

Barbour said, “Monteverde stepped up big in the penalty shootout. He took the pressure off of the guys shooting and those guys finished when it counted.

The next game for the Colts will be Wednesday Nov. 7th at 1 PM in Albuquerque as they will face the #1 seed Sandia Prep in the second round of the state tournament.

Barbour on Sandia Prep, “This win does give us some momentum going into this match. They are the #1 seed for a reason. They have a solid program throughout the years that I have been coaching. I do think this tournament is wide open though. Any team is beatable in this tournament.
