Taken in part from Karen Boehler’s article in the Chaves County Sports Report:

For the third year in a row, the Bronco women’s tennis team is headed to the NJCAA national championships. NMMI finished second in Region V — behind No. 4-ranked Collin County — to earn the nod.

“We’re very ecstatic about it and excited and it’s great for our team and our girls,” said Bronco coach Zeljka Vidic. “They worked hard all year round. They competed hard all weekend and all year, so we’re very excited about our results and being able to play at the national championships.”

Vidic also earned honors. For the second year in a row, she was named the region’s coach of the year.

NMMI began its quest to qualify for Nationals at the Region V Championship tournament. They lost on Thursday, April 18th to host Collin County, 8-1. While the only victory came at No. 2 doubles, where Valentina Beresiarte and Samantha Dunn won 6-4, 6-2, there were some close matches against the powerhouse Cougars. No. 6 singles Jazmine Burt took her match to three sets, and No. 2 Adalyn Hazelman went to a tiebreaker.

The Broncos picked things up on Friday, topping No. 12 Temple College 5-4. “It was a really tough match, but the girls played really well and competed well,” Vidic said. Earning victories were No. 1 doubles Leticia Godinet/Hazelman (6-2, 6-4) and No. 3 doubles Burt/ Alyssa Hawkins (7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1). Godinet had what Vidic called “a great win” at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-1); No. 5 Samantha Dunn won 5-7, 6-1, 6-1; and No. 6 Burt 6-1, 6-3. “That was a really close match. It was a great win for us,” Vidic said. “Very competitive. The girls competed well, so it’s exciting.” While Temple is ranked No. 12 nationally, NMMI beat the Leopards twice this year, despite being ranked three rungs below at No. 15. That, Vidic said, should help come time for the seeding at nationals.

NMMI closed out the Region V Tournament on Saturday with a 7-2 victory over North Central Texas College. “A tough match today,” Vidic said. “Very competitive and the girls played some great tennis and competed well.” Earning victories were No. 2 doubles Beresiarte/Samantha Dunn, 7-5, 6-4; No. 3 doubles Burt/Hawkins, 6-3, 6-1; and singles No. 1 Godinet 7-6 (7-3) 6-3; No. 3 Beresiarte 7-6 (7-5), 6-2; No. 4 Hawkins 6-2, 6-3; No. 5 Dunn 7-6 (7-2), 6-1; and No. 6 Burt 6-1, 6-2.Through the course of the tournament, every Bronco won at least one match, and, Vidic said, “represented the school well.”Next up are the national championships, May 5-11 at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. This is coach Vidic’s fourth year at the helm of the Bronco women’s tennis program. They’ve been to the NJCAA Women’s Tennis National Championship Tournament twice previously, finishing 22nd in the nation in 2010, and 8th in the nation last season. The seven-player Bronco women’s tennis team will leave on Friday, May 4th for Nationals. Here’s the prospective line-up:

Singles

No. 1: Litia Godinet, a sophomore from Pago Pago, American Samoa

No. 2: Adalyn Hazelman, a sophomore from Lautoka, Fiji

No. 3: Valentina Beresiarte, a freshman from Cordoba, Argentina

No. 4: Alyssa Hawkins, a sophomore from Pohnpei, Micronesia

No. 5: Samantha Dunn, a sophomore from Roswell, NM

No. 6: Jazmine Burt, a sophomore from Albuquerque, NM

Doubles:

No. 1: Godinet and Hazelman

No. 2: Beresiarte and Dunn

No. 3: Hawkins and Burt

The seventh player on the Lady Bronco’s roster is freshman Rachel Ballinger, from Plainview, TX. She’ll be ready in reserve, should any NMMI player be unable to continue play at the National Tournament. The bracket draws will be decided on Saturday, May 5th at the coaches’ meeting.

If you owe monies to the school, starting in May – no transcripts get sent, no diploma for graduates until all monetary obligations are met.

If you are suspended or in a disciplinary condition/situation with the Commandant’s office your graduation might/could be at risk. Every year there are cadets who do not graduate due to disciplinary issues. HS – your transcript will read, “Student met NMMI requirements for graduation. Diploma not awarded.” And you will have to regain good standing to earn that diploma. We will not present your name to the Board of Regents for graduation, so once you regain good standing – you have to wait for the next BOR meeting to get certified as a graduate.

Final transcripts to the next school – you must come in and order or request through the link on the Registrar’s web page. If you do NOT order, we do NOT send. Transcripts built before you depart in May get priority processing.

Summer school. Anyone who wishes to take summer school must have prior permission before taking the course. NMMI limits what courses you can take and checks on your requirements and the course so you do not take a course that will not meet graduation requirements. HS must work through their academic advisor, JC have a summer permission form on the registrar’s page.

Scheduling is on, re-enrollment is on-going. JC December 2012 graduates – after you complete scheduling, complete the JC graduation application and get it in early May to validate your courses to ensure you are on-track to graduate December 2012. As of today 10 JC May graduates (expected graduates) have not applied and will not graduate in May.

Honor graduates will NOT be determined until all grades are entered by faculty on graduates so we can process them for graduation and presentation to the Board of Regents for certification.

Congratulations to the NMMI Colt varsity baseball team! They won the Roswell Sertoma Colt Classic Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2005, with an 8-1 victory over the Dexter Demons. This is the seventh time the Colts have won the Classic, during its 18-year run.

Three members of the Colt team were selected to the 2012 All-Tournament Team:

Pierce Arnold – Arnold got the win in game one vs. Gateway Christian, going four innings on the mound with six strike-outs. He also played second base and shortstop and batted .444 for the tourney (4 for 9) with a double, a triple, three RBIs, six runs, and two stolen bases.

Caleb Saiz – Saiz threw all seven innings in the championship match vs. Dexter, recording five strike-outs against only one base on balls, allowing just one unearned Demon run. He played an error-free shortstop in games one and two, and boasted the second-best batting average for team NMMI, going 5 for 8 (.625) with one RBI, 5 runs scored, and one stolen base.

Chance Cavin – Cavin was selected the as the All-Tournament Most Valuable Player, and rightfully so. He bashed opposition pitching for six hits on nine at-bats, drove in five runs, scored three, had a triple and even stole second once. He also had the highest team slugging percentage, .889, and tied Saiz for highest on-base percentage, getting on safely 75% of the time. Cadet Cavin also had a perfect tournament in the field at first base, recording 24 put-outs on 24 chances, good for a 1.000 fielding percentage.

According to statistics from Facebook, the average person has 130 friends, hits the like button 9 times and becomes a fan of two pages per month. If each of you likes our Facebook page and shares it with four friends who do the same, we would hit over 4,000 people with our posts.

This means we would have the potential to reach over 1,000,000 people through our Facebook network!

Our goal is to reach 3,000 fans by the end of this month (Feb. 29).

In March, the NMMI Corps of Cadets will conduct the 6th Annual Cancer Awareness March. This Community Service event on the NMMI campus involves the entire Corps of Cadets and is designed to raise cancer awareness and donations in the fight against cancer and support for cancer survivors. Cadet Troops will compete against each other for the most miles completed by rotating marching squads, for 8 hours, over a two mile course. The goal this year is to raise $5000. Last year cadets raised $3300. Activities over the 8 hour period will include sports competitions, a barbecue and a pizza party for the cadets. Parents, family and friends wanting to contribute to this effort can send donations to the Commandant’s office with checks made payable to “NMMI Cadet Activities” prior to 1 April.

Cadet Store Official Takeover Notification

Effective 8 March, 2012, NMMI will transition Bookstore operations from Follett to Sodexo. In order to make the transition as seamless as possible, the Cadet Store will be closed from 8 March – 18 March, 2012 for inventory and systems implementation purposes.

Sodexo has been NMMI’s dining partner for 8 years, with a recently signed eight year contract extension. NMMI is excited about working with Sodexo in expanding products and services to meet the needs of the cadets. Greater communication and having a single source of accountability with the dining and bookstore programs solidifies this decision.

We would like to thank Follett for their many years of service to NMMI and wish them the best of luck in their business endeavors.
